Transport to Romania
The country’s transport infrastructure is modern and extensive. Due to its geographical location, Romania is an important crossroads for international trade. Romania is a densely populated country with a developing market economy. After the collapse of the Soviet bloc, it was one of the poorest countries in Europe during the 1970s. However, in the present century, it has developed rapidly, largely thanks to its EU membership and the strong demand from other member states.
Romania is Bulgaria’s third-largest trading partner among EU countries, after Germany and Italy. The economic growth of both Bulgaria and Romania in recent years (between 3% and 5% annually over the last five years) has boosted production and trade between the two countries – naturally stimulating transport as well.
Advantages of transport Bulgaria-Romania:
Lower costs, driven by the following factors:
- Geographical proximity: Romania is Bulgaria’s northern neighbor, and the transit route takes around 24 hours.
- Lower fuel prices in Bulgaria and Romania compared to the European average.
- Access to service and spare parts – significantly cheaper than in Western Europe due to various reasons (lower wages and labor costs, alternative parts from multiple suppliers, etc.).
- Lower road tolls – in Romania, a vignette is paid, while Bulgaria recently introduced a toll system, but prices remain much lower than those in Western Europe.
- Easier availability of drivers, mainly because of the nature of the work and lifestyle – drivers are more often close to their families and enjoy more normal working conditions.
- Fewer requirements and restrictions on eco-standards for freight vehicles – until recently, none at all. Since 01.03.2020, with the introduction of the toll system in Bulgaria, costs for older trucks have slightly increased, but there is still no significant difference between different categories of freight vehicles.
