The role of transport in the execution of delivery
One of the main objectives of logistics is achieving the spatial and temporal utility of a product, which would be unthinkable without appropriate transport. It is difficult to imagine how the delivery of all goods could be accomplished without modern forms of transport and organized logistics.
Transport is a key component of product distribution, ensuring that deliveries, their integration into production, and their sales are carried out on time, at the right place, in the required quantity and quality, and at an acceptable cost.
The most important aspect is the choice of transport mode and carrier for the products.
The role of transport is determined by:
- the transportation of the material product, which is the subject of the purchase–sale agreement and represents part of the contractual terms
- a number of transport-related problems (breakdowns, accidents, etc.) delaying the delivery significantly affect the condition and usability of the product
- the size of transport costs, including transport tariffs and additional charges – represent an important element in determining the efficiency of the overall delivery organization
- the conditions for carrying out the transport service, product insurance, customs duties and procedures, preparation of transport documents, and other similar aspects are an important component of the commercial transaction and, consequently, of the organization of the transport model, which in turn are elements of the logistics chain
Transport accounts for one-third of total distribution costs. Therefore, any change in the conditions for transporting goods negatively affects distribution costs, the selling price of goods, and profit. Within the logistics chain, the transportation and delivery of goods to where and when they are needed ensure the continuity of sales and customer service.
In conclusion, we can summarize that transport is one of the most important activities in logistics, without which none of its functions can be carried out.
