Route maps

As of 01.03.2020, road vehicles (HGVs) with two or more axles and a gross technically permissible maximum mass exceeding 3.5 tons (when combined with a trailer) are subject to toll charges. These charges are calculated based on the distance traveled, using either an on-board unit (OBU), GPS tracker, or a special route card.

Initially, trucks were expected to use a route card, with a gradual transition to OBUs or GPS trackers by March 27. Those who had already obtained such devices were able to use them starting March 1.

The route card is a one-time product for paying a toll fee. It entitles the road user to travel a pre-declared distance along a specified route. It is particularly suitable for one-off journeys or transit passages.

The route card is valid for 24 hours from the selected activation time. It is issued based on the starting and ending points of the journey. The truck owner must enter into the system up to four intermediate points along the chosen route, as well as the technical specifications of the vehicle. The user must declare the vehicle category, emission class (Euro standard), and number of axles, and then select whether to generate the shortest or the fastest route. Based on this data, the toll fee is calculated.

The declared route must be followed strictly. The start and end points are of utmost importance, as is the direction of travel. In the event of an incident or other roadblock that requires an officially announced detour, the driver will not be penalized for taking the alternative route. However, for any other deviation from the pre-selected route, an additional route card must be purchased.

Violators are subject to fines ranging from 1,800 to 3,000 BGN.

If the driver or vehicle owner registers in the system with their email address, they can purchase one or more route cards up to seven days in advance. For subsequent requests, the system will automatically suggest the previously entered data for their convenience. For unregistered users, a route card can be purchased up to two days in advance – it must be activated no later than 23:59 on the day following the purchase.

Route cards can be purchased through the same channels used for electronic vignettes: via the National Toll Administration website www.bgtoll.bg
