Combined transport of goods

Combined transport of goods is a transport system in which two or more modes of transport are used to move the same cargo unit or truck in an integrated way, without loading or unloading, within a door-to-door transport chain.

Truck

Trucks make it possible to provide door-to-door service, as they cover the short distances between factories and terminals. They allow the main advantages of road transport to be utilized – namely, a network that is denser and reaches farther.

Container

Containers lead to better logistical management of loading and unloading areas, as their rigid structure allows up to six units to be stacked in one pile. The lengths of containers are standardized, ranging from 20 to 53 feet.

A semi-trailer

While semi-trailers are more expensive and heavier, their advantage is that they can be attached directly to the tractor unit and do not require a road chassis, unlike containers and swap bodies.

Terminal

Terminals are exchange hubs between rail and road traffic. They are equipped with all the facilities necessary for the fast and efficient handling and transfer of cargo units from one mode of transport to another: gates and mobile cranes, modern computer systems, integrated rail tracks, warehouse space, transshipment areas, and connections to roads and highways.

Benefits of combined transport

Combined transport offers a number of advantages. It contributes to a better quality of life and provides a seamless transport solution to improve the performance of the entire supply chain.

The main advantages of combined transport can be summarized as follows:

  • Environmentally friendly: On routes where volumes can be consolidated and the distance is suitable, combined transport delivers significant energy savings and lower CO₂ emissions.
  • Beneficial for society: Reduces accidents, road congestion, and dependence on energy reserves.
  • Better utilization of existing capacity.
  • Flexibility of road transport combined with the cost-efficiency of rail for long-distance, large-volume shipments.
  • Well integrated into the logistics chain.
  • Safe and secure: Reduces the risk to goods during the transport journey.
