Common cargo abbreviations

We deal with many abbreviations on a daily basis, but not all of us know what they mean. Here are some of the most common and widely used abbreviations.

Common cargo abbreviations

ANF – Arrival Notification – notice of arrival – usually sent by the consignee and/or notifying parties on the bill of lading

B/L – Bill of Lading – a document that certifies the contract of carriage and receipt of goods by the carrier

COO – Certificate of Origin – certificate of origin of the cargo

DO – Delivery Order – document used to collect imported cargo

ETA – Estimated Time of Arrival – approximate time of arrival of a vessel at port or a cargo unit at a specified address

ETD – Estimated Time of Departure – approximate time of departure from port

FAK – Freight All Kinds – carriage of all types of cargo

IMO Class – classification number for dangerous goods

IMO – International Maritime Organization – UN body established to coordinate international maritime procedures and practices

INCO Term – internationally accepted and widely used commercial terms for trade

L/C – Letter of Credit – credit document issued between banks, forwarders, and consignees

FCL – Full Container Load – full container load

LCL – Less than Container Load – partial container load

FTL – Full Truck Load – full truck load

LTL – Less Than Truck Load – truckload smaller than the truck’s full capacity

M.V – Motor Vessel – motor vessel

OBL – Original Bill of Lading – original bill of lading

POD – Port of Discharge – place of discharge

POL – Port of Loading – place of loading

SOB – Shipped on Board date – the date on which the container was loaded on board

UN No. – United Nations Number – identification number assigned by the UN for dangerous goods in a cargo unit

DV – Declared Value – declared value

POD – Proof of Delivery – evidence that the goods were delivered to the consignee; this document is signed by the driver when goods are handed over

CMR – Convention Relative au Contrat de Transport International de Marchandises par la Route – standardized document for cross-border road transport based on UN recommendations
